In a small village in China's Guangdong province, the soundscape is shifting. Dialects that once changed from village to village are now fading as many young people no longer speak them. In his collection of photographs, "Dialect–The Fading Voice," photographer Boooya turns this quiet disappearance into a visual narrative, capturing scenes like earphones connecting different generations of villagers, signboards with text in local dialect, and portraits of those who still speak the distinct dialect of his hometown.

This rich array of expressions centered on fading dialects effectively facilitates communication of the composition's theme with the audience, helping to prevent an important piece of cultural heritage slipping from memory. Looking back on his childhood, Boooya remembers speaking as many as five dialects and feels a certain melancholy as he sees this cultural richness fading with time. Mobile photography has become his way to document this change and hold onto what time is erasing.

"Using my OPPO Find X8 Ultra, I set out to capture the culture of both today and tomorrow in the most authentic way—from dialects and traditional theater being carried forward from one generation to the next, to the widening linguistic divide between generations," he shares.

"The depiction of the ordinary has always been a timeless theme of photography," said Pete Lau, Chief Product Officer of OPPO and a member of the OPPO Photography Awards 2025 jury. "By avoiding grand narratives and instead following Lucky the puppy as a common thread through the series, Yu Huang's images convey a delicate and intimate observation of everyday life, with colors and lighting that evoke a lively, uplifting, and moving sensation in the viewer."
