Secure your smartphone with OPPO fingerprint lock

If someone uses your smartphone without your knowledge, or your phone is lost or stolen, you need to be confident that your personal data and accounts are secure. OPPO phones use multi-factor authentication to make sure only you can unlock your device.

Depending on the model of OPPO smartphone you have, you may be able to unlock your phone, secure apps and perform other functions using your unique fingerprint. You can add up to 5 different fingerprints on your OPPO phone, which can't be easily hacked like a passcode can.

How do fingerprint scanners on phones work?

Fingerprint scanners are now a common feature on phones across all price ranges. By storing your unique fingerprint in your phone, you can lock or unlock the device, secure apps and files or even make purchases simply by touching the screen when asked. But how do fingerprint scanners work?

There are three major types of fingerprint scanning technology, which offer different levels of security.

1. Optical scanners – rarely used today, these scanners take an image of the fingerprint and analyse this image to determine whether it's a match for the saved fingerprint. However, as optical scanners only scan a 2D image, they can sometimes be fooled by false fingerprints or photos. The hardware required is also too bulky to suit today's modern slimline smartphones.

2. Capacitive scanners – the most common type of fingerprint scanner on smartphones, capacitive scanners use conductive plates that detect the ridges and valleys of fingerprints pressed against them. These scanners are much harder to fool than optical scanners, especially at higher resolutions, but they may still be prone to hacking.

3. Ultrasonic sensors – a new type of fingerprint scanning technology used in high-end smartphones such as the OPPO R17 Pro, the scanner sends out an ultrasonic pulse that is absorbed or bounced back by the ridges, valleys and pores of the fingerprint. This creates a detailed 3D image of the scanned fingerprint that is very difficult to fool.

Is fingerprint more secure than password?

Unlike passwords that may be guessed or hacked, a fingerprint is unique to the individual. Someone looking over your shoulder may see you enter your passcode or phone pattern code and remember it, but they won't be able to use your fingerprint.

Even if someone doesn't know your password, the chance of guessing or cracking a four-digit passcode is 1 in 10,000, while the probability of a fingerprint matching is 1 in 50,000. Security experts recommend using two-step authentication that combines a passcode with fingerprint or face recognition for extra security.

How to open your phone with fingerprint

It's recommended that you set a passcode and save your fingerprint or face ID when you set up your OPPO phone for the first time. You need to set a passcode first before you can add a fingerprint.

This guide is applicable for OPPO smartphones using ColorOS 5.0 and above. You can check what ColorOS version you're using by going to [Settings] > [About phone].

How do I set a passcode?

There are several types of passcodes to choose from on OPPO phones. Depending on the model you have, these can include:

·        6 Digit Numeric Code – the default passcode option, a numbers-only passcode containing 6 characters

·        Pattern Code – a phone pattern with at least 4 dots connected in a line

·        4 Digit Numeric Code – a numbers-only passcode containing 4 characters

·        4-16 Digit Numeric Code – a numbers-only passcode containing between 4 and 16 characters

·        4-16 Digit Alphanumeric Code – a passcode containing between 4 and 16 numbers and/or letters

A passcode is more secure than a phone pattern. The longer and more complex a passcode is, the more secure it will be. To set your passcode:

1. Go to [Settings] > [Fingerprint, Face & Passcode]

2. Tap [Turn on Passcode]

3. Set a 6-digit passcode or choose [Other Encryptions] to enter a different type of passcode or phone pattern

Now that your fingerprint has been saved, you can set it as the default authentication to unlock your phone.

Anyone trying to use the app on your phone will now be asked to complete authentication.
