OPPO Introduces R11s, the Latest Flagship Camera Phone

OPPO, the camera phone brand, introduced the latest addition to its top-of-the-line flagship camera phone range, the R11s, in China. The R11s has the dual 16MP and 20MP rear cameras perform as two primary cameras for different light conditions, artificial intelligence technology for the front camera, and the special Starry Sky screen.

The higher sensitivity to light and large aperture would mean that images get even clearer and brighter than before. Together with its 6.01” FHD+ 2160 x 1080 dpi full screen and enhanced software, these technological advances will make the R11s one of the best camera phones available today.

The 20MP front camera, on the other hand, will utilize OPPO’s groundbreaking AI Beauty Recognition technology - a self-learning artificial intelligence technology that recognizes different human subjects in a selfie – to make subtle, natural and beautification enhancements customized for each subject.

The R11s also takes on a new approach in design – marrying functional innovation with UX (user experience) design. It has a 6.01” full-screen display with an 85.8 percent screen-to-body ratio. The Crescent Arc design, which are concave indentations built into the edges of the phone, holds the headphone jack, speaker and mini USB ports. Sound quality is no longer muted by the user’s hands, while at the same time enhancing the tactile feel and aesthetics of the slim and sleek unibody of the phone.

The R11s runs on the Qualcomm SnapdragonTM 660 chipset, comes with exceptional battery life with the 3205mAh battery and VOOC Flash charge technology.

New Technology for the Best Photography on a Smartphone

The dual rear cameras have been re-engineered to capture the highest quality of portraits for both day and night conditions.

The 16MP and 20MP rear cameras function as primary cameras for different light conditions. The 16MP rear camera takes on the primary role of normal everyday shots in brightly lit environments, while the 20MP HD camera becomes the main camera for low light environments. It will intelligently synthesize 2.0µm pixels to quadruple (4X) the size of the photosensitive area of the sensor, increasing the overall sensitivity to light for all images.

Both cameras have a large f/1.7 aperture, allowing more light into the device. The dual camera can also intelligently gauge distances between the phone and the subject, thereby creating soft and natural depth-of-field effects that will highlight the subject. With the large aperture in normal daylight and software treatment, the bokeh effect looks authentic and natural.

The 20MP front camera will utilize the A.I. Beauty Recognition technology that subtle, natural and personalized beautification enhancements for each subject within a selfie image. The A.I. would scan for 254 facial recognition points in 3D for each subject, reference them against its massive database of facial images, analyze features based on gender, age, skin texture, skin color, expression and environment scenarios before making enhancements, customized for each subject.

The A.I. Beauty Recognition technology can provide users with millions of different beautification effects that personalized – selfies are more attractive while keeping the natural look of each human subject.

To achieve cutting-edge camera phone photography, OPPO set up its "Ideal Portrait Laboratory". The R&D team consulted professionals in other fields such as photographers, make-up artists and photo retouching specialists in designing the software algorithms and physical camera and lens design. The highly acclaimed professional photographer, Russell James, known for his international Vogue magazine covers and 20—year relationship with Victoria’s Secret was one of the luminaries the team consulted, also shared his thoughts about photography at the launch event.

Simple yet Bold Design

The R11s comes with a 6.01-inch FHD+ screen with 2160 x 1080 dpi and 18:9 aspect ratio, giving a vivid, visual enjoyment without increasing the size of the phone. The R11s Red model comes with a Starry Sky screen, blurring the boundaries of screen and bringing a wider view.

“A bright starry night has always mesmerized every human culture all over the world throughout the ages. We recreated that same sense of awe and amazement of the night sky, with the R11s, exclusively for the Red Color model,” said Sheng Li, Product Manager of OPPO.

Applying User Experience (UX) design and technical innovation, the R11s is reengineered to make video watching and gaming more comfortable. Port modules such as the headphone jack, speaker and mini USB port were shrunk further and fitted into the Crescent Arcs – the concave, indented edges of the phone. This results in better sound projection without the user’s hands blocking the speakers during gameplay or watching videos.

Enhanced User Experience with ColorOS 3.2

Overall performance is smoother, faster and safer with the latest ColorOS 3.2 operating system. With the ColorOS 3.2, users can multitask using the Split Screen mode.

Facial Unlock uses artificial intelligence to recognize its user and will unlock the phone in a mere 0.08 secs. Other unlocking functions such as password and fingerprint scan are also available.

The CPU switches to a High Performance mode when the user activates the gaming app - especially important when gaming online and networking with other players. In High Performance mode, the R11s processes gaming graphics at 60 fps (frames per second), double the rate of 30 fps for other standard phones. The gameplay is more fluid, will not hang or pause*, or miss any frames that can affect multi-player games. While gaming, incoming calls, alarm clock, calendar alerts will only be notified as a banner on the screen, giving uninterrupted gameplay.
