Results are in: OPPO Reno’s pivot-rising camera withstands extreme temperatures, 1.5m drops

We previously shared that, among other things, the OPPO Reno series’ pivot-rising camera panel–which enables the phone to achieve a 93.1% screen-to-body ratio–can be used 200,000 times without problems. 

 

How did we come up with that number? Through extensive testing, of course. 


 

At OPPO’s QE Lab in our manufacturing base of Dongguan, China, staff conduct rigorous examinations of every piece of smartphone hardware, from motherboards to scuff-resistant finishing. 


 

The Reno’s pivot-rising panel, which contains the phone’s front-facing camera, flashlight, and microphone, has been subject to especially arduous stress-testing. 


Similar to our automated production process, analysis of parts also makes use of robotic equipment and information management systems in order to ensure top-notch performance throughout our products. 


 



During the process, the pivot-rising mechanism is tested 100,000 times as phones are encased in dusty environments, then isolated at low temperatures for 24 hours at a time. A separate test measures the number of rises and retractions at 65 degrees Celsius (149 degrees Fahrenheit) and -15 degrees Celsius (5 Fahrenheit). 


 


Another lab procedure imitates the effect of rain by simultaneously spraying Reno devices with multiple jets of water from different angles–with the front-facing camera panel exposed. 

 

 


A final test ensures that the panel still performs under conditions of 95% humidity, and while exposed to mist with 5% salinity.  


 


The pivot-rising panel’s 200,000-uses claim is backed up by substantial experience, as is its emergency retraction feature: when the phone is dropped, the panel automatically withdraws in 0.8 seconds to prevent damage. 


 


 

To ensure durability of the phone as a whole, in the QE Lab machines also drop Reno phones 20,000 times from each side at a height of 10cm. The bodies of the phones are twisted with metal clamps 1,000 times, and rolled over pebbles to test wear and tear. 



It’s not only about durability of hardware, however. As a premium phone line with outstanding camera features, prime performance in the visual department is also essential. 

 


To test the Reno 10x Zoom’s dual OIS image stabilization, which prevents blur, machines repeatedly shake phones set in camera mode. Other visual tests ensure that the phone’s multi-frame noise reduction software is performing correctly, and that the camera software automatically adjusts for lens distortion. 


 

 

Finally, the processes of phone production and parts testing are managed by advanced computer systems that monitor and keep track of every single component, ensuring that the finished product is both polished and ready to handle the rigors of the real world.
